Hoffman’s Chocolates — A Family Tradition of Legendary Chocolates

Hoffman’s Chocolates have been a staple in the Lake Worth area for over 30 years.   Who knew one of the finest chocolate shops in the country was right here in our own backyard!   The company is housed in the only Tudor style building on Lake Worth Road with the factory behind the retail store.  There is even a glass window dividing the two so you can watch the candy makers at work, which is particularly fun when they are making specialty holiday candy.

Regularly cited in national culinary magazines, Hoffman’s confections are all hand made using time-honored family recipes and old-world craftsmanship.  When Paul Hoffman started this company with his family, he made a commitment to use only the finest and freshest ingredients from around the world.  To that end, tasters are sent to various international locations to sample the ingredients.  They have been getting their chocolate from as far as Africa, and their coffee from as close as Costa Rica, and creating the most innovative products in the chocolate industry!  In fact, I’m told they are also developing an organic line of chocolates and coffees.

When you walk into any of their stores, you are compelled to stop and take a deep breath; customers are enveloped in the most wonderful scent of chocolate.  After shopping, there are some other great sites to see while you are visiting Hoffman’s Chocolate Factory.  Each year, several thousand visitors come to look at the Christmas display in the gardens behind the factory.  During the rest of the year the garden has an array of seasonal flowers and native Florida plants.  Whatever time of year, though, it makes a great trip.

You can visit Hoffman’s Chocolate Factory at:

5190 Lake Worth Road, Lake Worth, FL 33463.  Phone: 888.281.8800

 or www.hoffmans.com

Hoffman’s Chocolate Factory also has retail outlets in Wellington, Stuart, West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Palm Beach Gardens, Hollywood, Florida and at the Palm Beach International Airport.

Orlando to Host NBA All-Star 2012

Orlando to Host NBA All-Star 2012

The NBA All Star Weekend is 3 days of basketball action packed tight with events all leading up to the match up of the basketball’s finest.  For the second time, Orlando has been chosen as the host city for the NBA’s 61st showing of it’s signature event on Sunday, Feb. 26, at the Amway Center.  It will also mark the first time an Eastern Conference city has hosted an All-Star game since Atlanta did it in 2003.  Not surprisingly, though, it’s not all fun and games!

During NBA All-Star 2012, the NBA will continue to celebrate its tradition and commitment to social responsibility with a schedule of NBA Cares events.  NBA Cares will partner with schools, government, and local nonprofit organizations in Orlando and surrounding areas to highlight the league’s grassroots and community initiatives that reach millions of young people and their parents while providing critical resources to community-based programs.  This year, the NBA partners with the City of Orlando and Keep Orlando Beautiful, and as part of the NBA’s overall greening and sustainability efforts, the NBA will offer fans the opportunity to responsibly recycle unwanted electronic products (mobile devices, computers, televisions, VCRs, stereos, copiers and fax machines) at their recycling event on February 18.

The last time the All-Star Games were held in Orlando was in 1992.  The West defeated the East, 153-113, at the old Orlando Arena in a game that featured the (then) recently retired Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson, Detroit’s Isiah Thomas and Chicago’s Michael Jordan.  This year’s game will be held at the new Amway Center which is a state-of-the-art building featuring a sustainable, environmentally-friendly design; unmatched technology, including the largest, high-definition scoreboard in an NBA venue; and multiple premium amenities available to all patrons in the building.  This year’s roster promises not to disappoint the true sports fan, nor those who watch for pure entertainment!

While the main event of the weekend is, of course, the 2012 NBA All Star Game on Sunday, Friday’s Jam Session is a great interactive event for families.  The All Star Saturday night, I find, is great entertainment for the sports fan who enjoys the feats of athleticism that are showcased!  You know…the stuff you see on the street courts but rarely on the NBA courts!  If that’s the case, don’t forget to get your Slam Dunk Contest tickets so you can have an upfront view of the stunts as they get more and more outrageous!!  This year the question is, who can top Blake Griffin’s slam dunk over that car?!!

Whatever your favorite, this weekend will be chock full of fun!  Many fans say that the NBA All Star Game is the most exciting sports spectacle of the year, so don’t miss out!   I don’t know what’s entailed, but volunteer opportunities are also available at: http://nba.volunteerhub.com/

Blue Martini Ft Lauderdale Golf Tournament to benefit A Prom to Remember

For the third year, the Blue Martini Lounge (in conjunction with the Unforgettable Prom Foundation) will sponsor the Annual Blue Martini Charity Golf Tournament to benefit A Prom to Remember.  For most teens, the prom is the ultimate high school experience!  For kids battling cancer, however, that experience is missed because of their illness.  The goal of this event is to provide cancer-striken kids from the South Florida area something incredible to look forward to, and an experience that will give them lasting memories.  Moreover, this prom is an event that helps provide hope, strength and inspiration.

The golf tournament will be held on Monday, March 26, 2012 and the folks at the Blue Martini are looking for participants and sponsors.  The cost is $300 per person or $1,200 per foursome.  Tee signs can be purchased individually for $200.  There will be a Silent Auction after the event during the award ceremony, as well as food and drinks.  The proceeds from this tournament will provide all things prom!  That includes everything from tuxedoes for the boys; dresses, hair and make-up for the girls; limousine transportation; prom photos; food and entertainment.

The goal is to treat these kids like the rock stars they are!  When their limos arrive at the Ritz Carlton, they will walk the red carpet, and dance the night away.  Best of all, this experience is at no expense to the children and their families…..and your donation can help to make it happen!!

Senior Exercise and Fitness Tips

How to Gain Energy and Feel Stronger

Thinking about how to begin a fitness routine? Good for you! As you grow older, leading an active lifestyle is more important than ever. Regular exercise helps seniors maintain health, boost energy, and improve confidence.

The good news is—no matter your age, your health, or your fitness level—you can benefit from moving more. Whether you are generally healthy or are managing an illness, there are big and small ways to get more active and boost your fitness level.

Exercise is the key to healthy aging

Have you heard exercise is important for older adults, but don’t know where to begin? You’re not alone. Many seniors feel discouraged by fitness barriers, such as chronic health conditions or concerns about injury or falls. If you’ve never exercised before, you may not know where to begin. Or maybe an ongoing health problem or disability is keeping you from getting active. Perhaps you think you’re too old or frail.

The truth is that you can’t afford not to get moving. Exercise is the key to staying strong, energetic, and healthy as you get older. It can help you manage the symptoms of illness and pain, maintain your independence, and even reverse some of the symptoms of aging. And not only is exercise good for your body—it’s good for your mind, mood, and memory.

No matter your age or your current physical condition, you can benefit from exercise. Reaping the rewards of exercise doesn’t require strenuous workouts or trips to the gym. It’s about adding more movement and activity to your life, even in small ways. Whether you are generally healthy or are managing an illness—even if you’re housebound—there are many easy ways to get your body moving and improve your health.

The whole-body benefits of exercise for seniors

As you age, regular exercise is more important than ever to your body and mind.

Physical health benefits of senior exercise and fitness

  • Exercise helps seniors maintain or lose weight. As metabolism naturally slows with age, maintaining a healthy weight is a challenge. Exercise helps increase metabolism and builds muscle mass, helping to burn more calories. When your body reaches a healthy weight, overall wellness improves.
  • Exercise reduces the impact of illness and chronic disease. Among the many benefits of exercise for seniors include improved immune function, better heart health and blood pressure, better bone density, and better digestive functioning. Seniors who exercise also have a lowered risk of several chronic conditions including Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis, and colon cancer.
  • Exercise enhances mobility, flexibility, and balance in seniors. Exercise improves your strength, flexibility and posture, which in turn will help with balance, coordination, and reducing the risk of falls. Strength training also helps alleviate the symptoms of chronic conditions such as arthritis.

Mental health benefits of senior exercise and fitness

  • Exercise improves your sleep. Poor sleep is not an automatic consequence of aging and quality sleep is important for your overall health. Exercise often improves sleep, helping you fall asleep more quickly and sleep more deeply.
  • Exercise boosts mood and self-confidence. Endorphins produced by exercise can actually help you feel better and reduce feelings of sadness or depression. Being active and feeling strong naturally helps you feel more self confident and sure of yourself.
  • Exercise is good for the brain. Exercise benefits regular brain functions and can help keep the brain active, which can prevent memory loss, cognitive decline, and dementia. Exercise may even help slow the progression of brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Senior exercise and fitness: Tips for getting started safely

Are you ready to begin an exercise program? Congratulations! Committing to a routine of physical activity is one of the healthiest decisions you can make. Before you get moving, consider how best to be safe.

  • Get medical clearance from your doctor before starting an exercise program, especially if you have a preexisting condition. Ask if there are any activities you should avoid.
  • Consider health concerns. Keep in mind how your ongoing health problems affect your workouts. For example, diabetics may need to adjust the timing of medication and meal plans when setting an exercise schedule. Above all, if something feels wrong, such as sharp pain or unusual shortness of breath, simply stop. You may need to scale back or try another activity.
  • Start slow. If you haven’t been active in a while, it can be harmful to go “all out.” Instead, build up your exercise program little by little. Try spacing workouts in ten-minute increments twice a day. Or try just one class each week.  Prevent crash-and-burn fatigue by warming up, cooling down, and keeping water handy.
  • Recognize problems. Exercise should never hurt or make you feel lousy. Stop exercising immediately and call your doctor if you feel dizzy or short of breath, develop chest pain or pressure, break out in a cold sweat, or experience pain. Also stop if a joint is red, swollen, or tender to touch.

The Garlic in New Smyrna Beach

The Garlic in New Smyrna Beach

Who says you can’t find fine dining at the beach?!  The folks at The Garlic Restaurant market themselves as a casually sophisticated restaurant with an ambiance and menu reminiscent of the Tuscan countryside.  It’s a big leap, New Smyrna Beach to Tuscany, but believe me when I say, I was sold the minute I walked in!   OK, admittedly, I was wary of the big gimmicky garlic bulb on the outside of the building but I got over it!  Just approaching the entrance, the savory aromas were calling me, inviting me!  Once inside, it became evident that this wouldn’t be the run of the mill beachside food.

When my friends and I walked inside The Garlic, it was as though we had walked onto a Tuscan patio.  The walls are stucco and painted with the deep colors of the Tuscan region.  The vine covered arbor and tiled floors also added authenticity to the décor.  When I saw the fireplace, that removed any remnants of the beach that may have lingered in my thoughts!  While we waited to be seated, I got lost in the most wonderfully aromatic scent.  My mouth watered as I saw the waiters walking the soft, butter-like, roasted cloves of garlic over to the tables with hot bread.  Although they were busy, our wait was short and before long we had our own basket of goodies!

The menu was filled with the usual Italian options and a few that I don’t see often.  That said, I cautiously ordered the Chilean Sea Bass.  It’s one of my favorite meals but never have I had it prepared in an Italian kitchen.  Given what I had already sampled, however, I was feeling confident that these folks could pull it off…and I was right!  The fish was superb!  The flavor was just incredible, and the texture was perfect; it just melted in my mouth!  The rest of my party was also quite impressed with their meals; the eggplant parmigiana and the chicken alfredo, all spectacular!  The portions were generous and although we usually take home leftovers, they was nothing left on our plates!  ….and yet, we had to have dessert!  Tiramisu, of course!  …and I say that with some reservation.  Soggy ladyfingers are usually not my thing, but this was creamy and just sweet enough.  Somehow, and once again, the flavors and textures came together to make even my dessert experience a memorable one!  Another skepticism overcome, the Garlic is now my go-to restaurant in New Smyrna Beach.

Don’t take my word for it, though!  Go and experience The Garlic for yourself.  Get past that big garlic bulb, and let them show you what beach food should taste like.
