Stay Healthy, My Friends

My wish for Christmas is one that Santa and his elves would have a hard time fulfilling, but you all on the other hand, should be able to comply quite easily.  During the holiday season, the temptation of all those sugary sweets can be quite overwhelming.  In addition to all those goodies, Alcohol consumption is another thing to consider that might get overlooked for most.  Because of my family medical history, diabetes is something that I have to be conscious of, so I’m always concerned about the sugar content of the things I ingest.  Here is list of the alcohols that are safest and a link to a great article by Beverly Bird of the “Boardwalk Journal” that was posted on livestrong.com

  •  Distilled Liquor is the safest choice for those watching their glucose levels and calories.  The carbs and sugar get converted in ethyl alcohol with no traces left behind.
  • Beers have no sugar content for the most part.  Unless they have added flavor to them like micro brews that feature Honey Wheat, Orange flavor, etc.  What you want to be aware of with beer is the amount of carbohydrates they contain which will break down into sugar.
  • Champagne/Wine has the highest sugar and carbohydrate content of them all.
  • Mixed drinks that contain fruit juice are the most dangerous to your diet and diabetes because of the sugar content of the juices.  This goes for carbonated beverages as well, such coke, ginger ale and 7-up.   In addition, liqueurs like Grand Mariner, Alize,, Schnapps, and others also have a high sugar content.  It is recommended that you drink a distilled liquor straight or with water or a diet tonic.holiday party for friends

As you head to out to spend time with family and friends please keep my magic word in mind “moderation” and help make my christmas wish come true –  that you all stay healthy, my friends.
