Florida College Basketball Is Underway And Off To A Decent Start

College Basketball Is Underway in Florida

Eight or so games into the 2012-2013 basketball season there are a few Florida College Basketball teams setting the standard for the rest.  Out in front are  the University of Florida Men’s Team.  Moving up to a No. 5 ranking in both the AP and the ESPN polls, the Gators are now (7-1) after starting the season with seven straight wins until suffering a loss this week to the No. 8 ranked Arizona Wildcats of the PAC 10 Conference.    Right behind them are the Lady Bulls of University of South Florida.  Until yesterday’s loss against 24th ranked Nebraska, they were last team out of Florida with a perfect record.  Sharing the same (8-1) record as the Lady Bulls of USF are the Lady Noles of FSU, who coincidently had their perfect record tarnished by the same Nebraska team a week earlier.  After this things kind of taper off.

The Miami Hurricanes (6-1) men’s program shows promise as a contender, especially after upsetting No. 13 ranked Michigan St.  Never mind the fact that the Canes were upset earlier in the season by a Florida Gulf Coast team that sits atop the Atlantic Sun Conference with a (7-4) record.  The FGCU Eagles have probably had one of the toughest schedules of any other Florida team so far this season, facing off against a competitive VCU, Miami, 9th ranked Duke, St. John’s as well as Iowa State.  After surviving these school the rest of the season should be a breeze.  The Eagles have yet to play against a school in their conference, where only one other team has a record above .500.  The Men’s Seminoles (5-4) squad may be the only other team to face off against as many top ranked schools as FGCU.  And the Noles will have a rough road ahead in a conference (ACC) filled with reputable rivals including three Top 25 schools.

The Lady Gators are hanging in there with a respectable (8-3) record. Coming off a 74-50 routing of the La Salle Explorers the second half of the Lady Gator’s schedule will be a real challenge, starting with conference rivals, No. 7 ranked Kentucky on Jan. 3, 2013.  Here are  a few more games that may be of interest to the fan of Florida Colleges and Universities.
