Win Free Luxury Tickets to NBA All-Star event

Locals could win free luxury box seat tickets to an NBA All-Star event.

Orange County residents are eligible to enter a raffle to win a pair of tickets to this year’s NBA All Star Saturday Night!  The raffle is run by Mayor Teresa Jacobs’ office and eight pair of tickets will be awarded to Orange County residents for the All-Star evening event held on Saturday, Feb. 25 which features four competitions among top NBA players.

The city of Orlando and Orange County have come under fire recently regarding the free tickets some of the elected officials have received.  There have been questions about whether they could or should have donated those tickets to local charities.  Mayor Jacobs and the other commissioners stand by their decision to use their luxury seats for the All-Star game.  They say that the All-Star game is a critical opportunity for the commission to host corporate CEOs and potential convention center clients.  Critical because the interaction with any one of those clients could bring thousands of delegates to the area, having a tremendous economic impact.

The ticket contest runs Monday through Friday.  The winners will be announced at the county commission meeting on Feb. 20.

The website where the contest can be entered is:   http://netapps.ocfl.net/NBARaffle/Default.aspx

Hoffman’s Chocolates – A Legend in Florida

Hoffman’s Chocolates — A Family Tradition of Legendary Chocolates

Hoffman’s Chocolates have been a staple in the Lake Worth area for over 30 years.   Who knew one of the finest chocolate shops in the country was right here in our own backyard!   The company is housed in the only Tudor style building on Lake Worth Road with the factory behind the retail store.  There is even a glass window dividing the two so you can watch the candy makers at work, which is particularly fun when they are making specialty holiday candy.

Regularly cited in national culinary magazines, Hoffman’s confections are all hand made using time-honored family recipes and old-world craftsmanship.  When Paul Hoffman started this company with his family, he made a commitment to use only the finest and freshest ingredients from around the world.  To that end, tasters are sent to various international locations to sample the ingredients.  They have been getting their chocolate from as far as Africa, and their coffee from as close as Costa Rica, and creating the most innovative products in the chocolate industry!  In fact, I’m told they are also developing an organic line of chocolates and coffees.

When you walk into any of their stores, you are compelled to stop and take a deep breath; customers are enveloped in the most wonderful scent of chocolate.  After shopping, there are some other great sites to see while you are visiting Hoffman’s Chocolate Factory.  Each year, several thousand visitors come to look at the Christmas display in the gardens behind the factory.  During the rest of the year the garden has an array of seasonal flowers and native Florida plants.  Whatever time of year, though, it makes a great trip.

You can visit Hoffman’s Chocolate Factory at:

5190 Lake Worth Road, Lake Worth, FL 33463.  Phone: 888.281.8800

 or www.hoffmans.com

Hoffman’s Chocolate Factory also has retail outlets in Wellington, Stuart, West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Palm Beach Gardens, Hollywood, Florida and at the Palm Beach International Airport.

Most Romantic Cities in the USA

Two Florida Cities Are Most Romantic!

Most Romantic?  How ’bout that, Floridians!  We made Foursquare’s list of the top ten most romantic places in the US!  The findings were based on more than 1.5 billion check-ins over the past year at places deemed romantic by the social network, such as restaurants and flower shops.  The most romantic city? The happiest place in the world!  Lake Buena Vista, Fla., the L-B-V, otherwise known as home to Walt Disney World.  Yup, can’t compete with that.  Also on the list?…none other than….Key West!!

Foursquare is a great website/app that helps you keep up with friends and discover what’s nearby.  It is a location-based social networking website for smartphones.  Users “check-in” at venues using a mobile website, or text message by selecting from a list of venues that the application locates nearby.  The location is based on the GPS hardware in the mobile device or network location provided by the application.  Additionally, each check-in awards the user points and sometimes “badges” that can be used towards discounts.  Check them out at http://foursquare.com/

So…we can’t do anything to help those cities that were not on the list, or voted least romantic.  We can, however, invite you to visit us here in the Sunshine State!

Here’s the list for 2012:

Most romantic

1. Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

2. Napa, Calif.

3. Venice, Calif.

4. St. Louis

5. New York City

6. San Francisco

7. Reston, Va.

8. Beverly Hills, Calif.

9. Myrtle Beach, S.C.

10. Key West, Fla.

Least romantic

1. Beaverton, Ore.

2. Bethlehem, Pa.

3. Lawrenceville, Ga.

4. Sterling Heights, Mich.

5. West Chester, Pa.

6. Normal, Ill.

7. Norwalk, Conn.

8. Tustin, Calif.

9. Duluth, MN

10. Waltham, Mass

New Year’s Eve for teenagers

by on December 14, 2011 at 11:03 am

New Year’s Eve for teenagers

New Year’s Eve for teenagers can be fun too!  If you don’t try to be involved or guide New Year’s Eve for teenagers then you will be up all night worrying.  Even worse they will be up all night complaining.  As the adults we can encourage them to minimize all possible risk.  Here are a few idea that we believe can keep teenagers happy, maybe at home but most importantly safe!

Have a sleepover.

Sounds like this may only be for girls huh?  Well not necessarily.  All teenagers love to hangout with their friends.  Have them invite either sex friends and have a campout or sleepover.  The guys may have to camp outside while the girls sleep indoors and you put on the alarm to know if anyone tries to come in or out of the house but they can stay up all night and talk.  They can dance and ring in the New Year together.  They can play music, watch videos or movies and be in the safe confines of your home.

Throw a party.

Take option number one and go one step further.  Throw a New Year’s Eve bash at your house.  Now we encourage you to make it just for the teens so you can supervise them (without being over protective).  When and adult party mixes with a teen party, either the kids are bored or the adults are frazzled or little supervision actually takes place.  Now it may be a painful evening for the adults, but it’s only a few hours of your life and it will do wonders for keeping your kids safe. The key is to absolutely prevent drinking and smoking. It should be stated clearly on the invitations and you should stay vigilant during the party that there will NOT be any liquor consumption or smoking of any kind. Take this seriously. Parents who are caught supplying alcohol, even inadvertently, to minors face serious liabilities. In some states, parents are subject to severe financial consequences, including fines and restitution to victims in the event of an accident. In addition, they may be charged in the criminal courts for, among other things, contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Let your teenagers pick the music and make mixed discs to play all night.  If you can afford it you can get them a DJ.  Make sure your TV is tuned in to the popular “ball drop” shows with the volume down. Have lots of snacks and make drinks that look alcoholic in nature, taste great and look enticing.  Keep tasting the drinks all night to ensure it does not get spiked.  You must have noisemakers for the teens to bring in midnight. If your teen wants confetti for the ball drop, consider getting mini bottles of bubbles for them to blow instead so you aren’t faced with cleaning all of the confetti the next morning. Finally, make your decor simple and inexpensive.  String your Christmas lights all over the party room and turn out the lights.  Buy some balloons and scatter them around the floor.  Lastly, provide a safe place for storing purses, coats and other valuables. Remember to put a cap on the number of people that can be invited. If you can gather a list with parent phone numbers in case of emergency you are on to something.

Bowling

If your teenager just has to go out on New Year’s Eve and you feel compelled to give in then suggest that they go bowling.   Hanging out with their friends at a bowling alley can be lots of fun.  See if you know of one nearby that offers midnight bowling. Some allies even have black light bowling, where the lights are turned low, a DJ plays music, and the pins and bowling balls glow. You can speak with the bowling alley manager and ask them to keep an eye on them for you.  You can even leave your phone number to call if necessary.

Regardless of where they go on New Year’s Eve, take the time to talk to them. Remind them of the dangers of alcohol and of drinking and driving.  They may seem like they are not paying attention to you but it does register.  They may even get into trouble by making a poor choice that they knew not to do but it is not because they didn’t hear you.  It is moreso because they wanted to try something and the lesson learned reinforced that you knew what you were talking about.  They love you.  Remond them that you love them.  Everything will probably be just fine.
