New Port Richey will “Rock the Park”, for the second year in a row, at the Sims Park Amphitheater.  Presented by the Tampa Bay Times, on Saturday May 19, this free concert will feature several local artists including the 3-piece alternative band from Tampa-Sunshine & Bullets, as well as Chicago blues artist R.J. Howson!

This event is designed to entertain not just the grownups, but the kids as well!  There will be face painting, bounce houses, and lots of food and drink vendors.  There will also be a blood drive, silent auction of sports memorabilia, vacation getaways and more.  In addition to entertainment, this is also a charitable event, delivering the bulk of the proceeds to the Center for Independence, a nonprofit organization that offers housing, day care, transportation and other services to the developmentally disabled in Pasco County.  Best of all, though, especially because Saturday is also Armed Forces Day, and with Memorial Day around the corner, it’s only fitting that a portion of the proceeds will also help a local wounded veteran in need.

So spread the word Florida!  Let’s get out to New Port Richey this Saturday!

Rock the Park

Orlando’s iconic lake to host extreme water sports festival

Water skiing in Orlando’s Lake Eola is not something you expect to see!  In September, however, the City Beautiful will be hosting an “extreme water sports festival” featuring world-champion water skiers.  This two-day event will also include wakeboarding exhibitions, nighttime jumping competitions, music and a muscle-car show.  Held on the same weekend as the Surf Expo trade show in the Orange County Convention Center, the festival’s $100,000 purse should attract water skiing’s top talent, and plenty of spectators!!

Wondering why Lake Eola??  Well, it seems this is a nod to the lake’s history!  Skiers were part of the celebration when Eola’s fountain was unveiled in 1957 and had continued to perform there over the years since then.  So while this is new to us, it all fell into place as Orlando’s Mayor, Buddy Dyer, broke the news on Monday!  Joining Dyer in breaking the news were City Commissioner Patty Sheehan, professional skiers Ryan and Breanne Dodd and Freddy Krueger (holder of the world ski-jump record).  As a sample of things to come, Krueger even performed jumps from a ramp that was set up near the Lake Eola fountain.

Tickets are being sold for $15/day at www.soakedorlando.com for the festival on September 7th and 8th.  …and bring the kids along because this is a family affair!  For kids, ages 4-12, organizers have included a Kidz Zone, featuring extreme sports like rock climbing and bungee jumping, but there will also be face painting, caricatures and a magic show.  It seems there’ll be a little something for everybody…except maybe the swans!

Think Like A Man

by on April 11, 2012 at 11:20 pm

Think Like A Man Is Probably the Funniest Movie of the Year

TLAM Movie Poster  “Think Like A Man” is a Sony Pictures release based on comedian/actor Steve Harvey’s bestselling book, Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man.  The romantic comedy follows the relationships of four couples as they navigate the modern dating scene.  The ladies, played by Regina Hill of the Scary Movie franchise; Gabrielle Union, Good Deeds; Meagan “Goodie Good” Good; and Academy Award winner, Taraji P. Henson are fed up with unsatisfactory relationships and soon learn the error of their ways (from author by Steve Harvey) and begin to tip the dating scales in their favor.  And just when it seems all is lost for the fellas, Micheal Ealy, Barbershop; Jerry Ferrara, Entourage; Terrance J. 106&Park; and Romany Malco, 40 Year Old Virgin and The Showtime Original Series Weeds, they discover the source of their problems and attempt to set things back in their proper order only to get tangled up in their own web of lies.  Oh, what a tangled web– you know the rest.  What happens next is sort of the whole point of the movie so I’ll leave it to you to go see.

Think Like A Man” is a very balanced film, delivering something for both it’s male and female audience.  Rainforest Films did a great job with this.  The pairings work well and the cameos just don’t quit.  I don’t think there was anyone who was not in this film.  I even believe they snuck in a Boondocks cameo in the opening sequence.  It’s like a movie version of Jazz In The Gardens, providing punches all the way through.  Funny man Kevin Hart will have you laughing out loud and leaving with a smile on your face.  You’ll definitely get your money’s worth here.  Enjoy the ride, I certainly did. This is easily the funniest movie of the season.  In theaters April 20, 2012

Julie Dexter is Coming to Jacksonville

Julie Dexter is New Again and coming to Jacksonville

Come See The Sensational Julie Dexter @ Poppy Smoke Love March 29th, 2012 in Jacksonville, FL

Wed Mar. 14 – Just got off the phone with the Julie Dexter and can’t wait to see her show when she comes to Jacksonville.  We talked about her latest project, working with producer Steve “Miggedy” Maestro,  the new video for hit single “New Again” directed by Alex Magaña and crab legs.  Yep. I had to get her back on the phone a second time to find out more.  You should know by now how much I like good people.

Julie Dexter Black & White

photo credit Seth Kammueller & Jessica Williams

Originally from Birmingham, England, this classically trained artist composes and arranges her own  music.  Her journey to success began 1994 when she first appeared on The Jamaican Beat Vol 1 with Jazz Jamaica.  Five years later she packed up her bags and headed to the States making residence in Atlanta, GA where she now resides.  With encouragement from her management she launched on own label, Ketch A Vibe Records and the rest is history.

Rejoicing in the blessing of her 9 month old son, this mother of two is just getting started.  She is New Again just like the title of her first solo project in six years.  Julie told us that “I enjoyed making the  whole album…the music just touched me.   He [Steve "Miggedy" Maestro] came with like 40 or 50 tracks.  I’ve never been so in tune with a producer, he was able to deliver just what I was looking for.”  On this project you’ll hear some of that Rose Royce sound with the horns and though she confesses that she’s never been much of a slow jam singer, you’ll get some of that as well, reminiscent of yesteryear.

We briefly spoke on the rigors of motherhood and running her own label.  As for managing a six year old,  a 9 month old, and a record label Julie tells us “It’s what I like to call my beautiful struggle.  Like anything it demands you get organized.  You gotta make it happen.  I have a wonderful support system.  It also teaches one of the most important lessons in life about following your dreams.  Pursue you passion, it’s the best lesson you can teach anyone.  I’ve been fortunate enough to make a living doing something I love and support my family.  When I started [Ketch A Vibe Records] it was about more control.  Instead of looking for an outlet I decided to create an opportunity.  It’s about more control of my business, my royalties are my 401K.  And I’m still figuring it out myself, still building.

It was surprising to learn that though she’s been creating music since 2000 with her Ketch A Vibe Debut project Peace of Mind,  The video for New Again directed by Alex Magaña is her first Official Music Video.  Check it out below.  New Again is a very intimate song that will make you take an introspective look at love.  If you know about the work it takes to make love work you’ll appreciate the sentiment and emotion in this one and if you don’t, you’ll learn a thing a two about keeping it fresh.

Before we wrapped up Miss Dexter had one special request.  She told me, “When I come to Jacksonville I want to get some crab legs, I love ‘em.  King crabs with all the meat” so I’ll need you guys to help me out.  I’m working it from my end, but if you’ve got a recommendation leave a comment.  See soon Jax.

Fort Myers’ Edison and Ford Winter Estates

Fort Myers’ Edison and Ford Winter Estates

With Spring-breakers storming the beaches, I am reminded that Florida has a long history of being the state where Americans get away from it all!!  Long before jet ski’s, long before air conditioners, even ceiling fans, folks came to our beaches to relax for a week or two.  Just like today’s snowbirds, some escaped the cold weather for the entire winter season!  Two very notable snowbirds are Thomas Edison and Henry Ford.  These two inventors and titans of industry were neighbors, having purchased adjacent pieces of property in Fort Myers along the Caloosahatchee River.  Currently named The Edison and Ford Winter Estates, these two properties have been restored, and include a historical museum and 17 acre botanical garden.  The evidence of their genius and creativity still exist and are available for public viewing.

The Edisons purchased the property to build their vacation home (on the advice of Thomas Edison’s doctor).  The estate – the family’s living quarters, guest house, caretaker’s house, were completed in 1887 and named Seminole Lodge.  At the time, electricity wasn’t a part of everyday living and, as would be expected, Edison wired the entire home.  In fact, Edison equipped the home with all kinds of novelties, including one of the first in-ground pools in the country.  There was an intercom system which he used to startle his guests, and lights in the closet that blinked on automatically whenever the doors were opened.  Edison also had a communal dining area and kitchen built in the guest quarters because he didn’t like to smell food cooking.  On the property is a wooden fence that became to be known as the “friendship gate”.  On the other side of the gate is the Ford property, The Mangoes.  The Fords purchased this land in 1916, when it became available, so that Henry Ford could spend time with his friend and mentor.

Edison had chosen Fort Myers specifically because of his interest in the vegetation of southwestern Florida.  He had been experimenting with bamboo; carbonizing the bamboo fibers and using them as filaments for his incandescent light bulb.  When Ford joined him, they teamed up with another good friend, Harvey Firestone, in pursuing lower cost methods of manufacturing rubber.  At the time, rubber was a crucial component for most twentieth-century products, and especially crucial for Ford and Firestone.  Rubber was used for tires and the insulation for telegraph wires, and costs were rising rapidly.  They built a lab and sought a crop that could grow quickly and contain enough latex to support their research.  They planted a variety of exotic plants and trees, and as they experimented they sent sample rubber residues up to Edison’s New Jersey factories.  Edison’s lab and botanical garden still remain as a part of today’s attraction.  The garden contains more than a thousand varieties of plants from around the world, including African Sausage Trees and a 400-foot banyan tree given by Harvey Firestone in 1925.  Although it was originally an experimental garden for those industrial products, Mrs. Mina Edison later gave the garden a more aesthetic look with plantings of roses, orchids and bromeliads.

In 1947, Mrs. Edison deeded the estate to the City of Fort Myers, and in 1950 it was opened for public tours.  In the late 1980′s, the Ford winter estate was also purchased and subsequently opened for public tours.  In 2003, the governance of the entire site was transferred from the City to a non-profit corporation, Thomas Edison & Henry Ford Winter Estates, Inc. (dba Edison & Ford Winter Estates, Inc) whose mission is to protect and preserve the site.  After a recent $10 million restoration project, the estates are open to the public and many of the inventions and artifacts are on exhibit.  Ford and Edison’s inventions still have such an impact on everything we use today.  Imagine visiting Henry Ford’s garage!  It’s a treat to have access to the personal lives and minds of, arguably, the greatest innovators of the twentieth century!!
