“I accept this award of course on behalf of my late father… and my mom who is with me today,” Jean said to the crowd after accepting the key. “Walking in here, I teased my mom and I said to her ‘Look, all the beatings you gave me, they actually paid off.”

Turkey Trot This Thursday

by on November 22, 2011 at 8:04 am

Worried about those extra calories on Thanksgiving? Well, I’ve got the answer to what ails you! Before the parade; maybe after you put the bird in the oven; whether you are visiting friends and family or not….you can work off those calories in one of the many local “turkey trots” around the state!

What’s a “turkey trot”, you ask? A 5K race on Thanksgiving Day (the distance may vary, but not usually), it’s a great way to begin an exercise regimen, or at least alleviate some of the guilt we feel on the big day! There are lots of excuses to be made for not partaking in this kind of event, but they’re easily overcome, and I challenge you to do so! **

Turkey Trot

Maybe you’ve never run a race before. That’s alright! At the event, there will be those who are very serious racers that will be timing themselves but there will also be those participants who are there just for the health of it! These races are all inclusive. There are walkers, runners, people with canes, parents with strollers, even small children. If this is your first time, please don’t be intimidated. A 5K is approximately 3.1 miles, and there should be no requirement that you maintain a certain speed or finish in a certain time frame. If you choose to stroll for 3 miles, just follow the crowd. I’m sure you’ll find yourself in great company!

Maybe you’ll be in a different city for the holiday. That’s OK too. Many of these races will be held in public downtown areas or neighborhood squares. There are usually thousands of people walking, running, cheering, and guiding. Especially if you’re alone, this is a great alternative to taking a walk on isolated neighborhood streets. Whether you are staying at a friend’s home or at a hotel, getting some exercise in this manner could be a much safer alternative! You may also get a chance to see some of the sites!

Didn’t register for the race? Not to worry! Although I don’t encourage this as regular behavior (the proceeds usually go towards a charity or similar organization), do it anyway!! The course will probably be held on public streets. If you are not worried about being timed for official race purposes, take advantage of the opportunity to join the community on what should be a crisp Florida morning!

Look, we all know there is a great deal of indulgence on turkey day. So, enjoy some fitness before you feast. Don’t let your nerves, your unfamiliarity with the neighborhood, or any other reason get in the way of getting a good work out on Thanksgiving day! You’ll feel better as you sit down to dinner and maybe it’ll kickstart a new habit and a healthier lifestyle!

Here’s a schedule of races around the state on Thursday. Good luck and have fun! Gobble gobble!

**It’s always a good idea to check with a doctor before starting any strenuous exercise program.

Thanksgiving Day Parade in Orlando

by on November 21, 2011 at 9:55 am

There’s no better tradition on Thanksgiving Day than the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.  Are you kidding?  It’s the beginning of the holiday season!  Growing up, we all knew, if you couldnt enjoy it standing on the freezing sidewalks of NY, the only alternative was to watch it on TV.  My friends, things have changed!!  We are now able to bask in the balmy Orlando weather as our fan favorites float by!

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a monumental annual NYC event.  There will be an anticipated 3.5 million people lining the streets, more than 50 million people viewing at home, and more than 10,000 participants as the 2011 Macy’s Parade winds through the nearly six-mile route of Manhattan.  Arguably the biggest parade in America, Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade NYC  started in 1924 and comes with lots of expectations.  Today it’s known for the famous giant floats, but it started very differently.

In the 1920s, the Macy’s department store employees were first-generation immigrants.  They were proud of their new American heritage, wanted to show their civic pride during the Thanksgiving holiday with the type of festival their parents had loved in Europe, so they formed their own parade near the flagship store in Herald Square.  (just an aside, I envision this to look like that scene, early in the movie Godfather II…you know the one!!  …but I digress…) The employees made floats, played instruments, and borrowed animals from the Central Park Zoo.  They would march from Harlem to 34th Street dressed in vibrant costumes.  At the end, Santa Claus would come out to the balcony of the store and be crowned “King of the Kiddies.”  Over the years, the animals would be replaced by large animal-shaped balloons, originally created by the Goodyear.   My personal favorite, Felix the Cat made his debut in 1928.  Felix was originally filled with air, but by 1930, helium and safety valves were implemented to keep he and his friends afloat for longer period of time.

During the 1930s, as the Parade became more popular, it was broadcast on local New York radio.  After it was featured in the movie, Miracle on 34th Street, in 1947, it became an institution!!  The parade was then broadcast on network television in 1948, and the rest, as they say, is history!!  The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade became a part of Americana.  Today’s parade features musical performances from Broadway shows, some of today’s most popular musicians, and the Radio City Rockettes.  There are 15 balloons (recently, a new one every year), 12 marching bands, 27 floats, countless musical performances, and celebrity appearances so this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade lineup should be as exciting as it always is….but you wont have to bundle up!

This year (and since 2001), viewers can line the streets of Universal Studios Florida as the parade comes through with all the fanfare for which it’s historically known!  …and they dont skimp!  There will be all the balloons, floats, marching bands – even Santa!  Add 20 degrees to the thermostat and it’s an event even Scrooge would attend!  Afterwards, stick around and enjoy another holiday tradition, a tree lighting with music and display of lights around Universal’s Holiday Village!  Guests can buy gifts and walk around with holiday treats for the whole family.  It’s just the perfect place to get in the spirit of the season!

For prices and other details go to:  http://www.universalorlando.com/Events/Holidays/Overview.aspx

You can catch the parade live nightly (at dusk) on:
December 3, 4, 10, 11, 17, 18 at 5:30pm
December 5-9, 12-16, 19-25, Jan 1 at 5:00pm
December 26-31 at 8:00pm

Florida Classic Weekend is NOW!

by on November 18, 2011 at 10:58 am

The Florida Classic is not just a football game between the Florida A&M University Rattlers and Bethune Cookman University Wildcats.  It is not just a 30 year rivalry between these two universities.  It’s an HBCU tradition.  One that brings students, alumni, family and friends to Orlando, FL to participate in the fanfare of the most attended NCAA Division I-AA college football game in the nation.

Sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield, The Florida Classic has surpassed the Bayou Classic, boasting having over 1.5 million spectators.   This college football game transforms Orlando, FL into event central with a variety of events taking place all over the city.  The festivities all ready underway, but it’s not too late for you to join the fun.  The events will continue well into Sunday afternoon and they are still plenty of tickets available if you are interested in attending.

This year the Amway Center will hold the Florida Blue battle of the Bands.  This show will be filled with well choreographed moves performed by pumped up dance teams alongside their schools top ranking high school marching band.  Attendees will see performances by the Marching Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman University and the world famous Marching 100 of Florida A&M University.

Here is a list of the high school bands that will be playing:

Participating High School Bands:
Bahamas All*Stars
Barron Collier Marching Cougars
Burke High Stepping Bulldog Band
Dillard Marching Panthers “The Force”
Jones Marching Tiger Band
Palm Beach Lakes The Ram Regiment
Piper Marching Band of Pride
Southwest DeKalb Marching Panther Band
Tri-Cities High School Marching Bulldog Band

Many of the events do run concurrently so you’ll have to choose your pleasure.  For instance, while the Battle of the Bands taking place the Official Classic Step Show is being held at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center.  Everyone should experience a Classic Step Show at least once.  These greek fraternities and sororities compete for prizes and absolutely the bragging rights.

The excitement in watching a Florida Classic Step Show comes from the way each team moves and steps and brining in everything from gymnastics to break dancing to even tap dancing.  Some teams may include African and/or  Caribbean music or dance moves or they may even perform stunts as a part of their routine. But no matter what is incorporated into this step show one thing is for sure.  It is TRULY not to be missed.

On Saturday, join Blue Cross and Blue Shield for a pregame tailgate in the northwest corner of the stadium campus then it’s game-time.  The BCBS Florida Classic kicks off at 2:30pm and will be broadcasted on ESPN Classic for those not fortunate enough to attend.  Then after the game Frontline Promotions & Doug E. Fresh turn it up a notch for the Official Florida Classic After Party.  This event takes place at the Orlando House of Blues and is presented in association with Insights Marketing & Blazin Entertainment.  There will be live performances by Doug E. Fresh and Big Daddy Kane.  Music will be by DJ Ace of “The Moon”, DJ Lyvwyr of “Front-Line” and Chill Will.  If you havent experienced a Doug E. Fresh party then you need to run on over to buy your ticket, fast, because this event sells out every year.

Best tip for getting through Classic Weekend without burnout…take it one event at a time.

by on November 14, 2011 at 1:27 pm

President Bill Clinton is in Orlando today for a book-signing event at a Barnes and Noble.

The former president recently released his new book Back to Work: Why We Need Smart Government for a Strong Economy.

Mr. Clinton will start signing books at 8 p.m. at the bookstore on East Colonial Drive in Orlando.  If you want to meet Mr. Clinton you can get there as early as 8am.  You will need a wristband.

The Barnes & Noble’s website says attendees will have to be thoroughly screened before entering.  There will be a full security check.  The permission of cameras and video cameras are banned.  Barnes & Noble says the former president will only be signing his new book.

Today’s event marks the third visit by a former or current member of the White House in the last two months.  President Barack Obama came to Orlando in early October for a fundraiser.  Vice President Joe Biden spoke at several events in Orlando in late October.

Casey Anthony Book Signing

by on November 14, 2011 at 7:02 am

Casey Anthony book released today!

Independence day redefined!  On July 5, 2011, Casey Anthony was acquitted of killing her two-year old daughter Caylee Anthony.   On November 15, 2011, Jeff Ashton’s book, Imperfect Justice, is being released.  Jeff Ashton, the prosecuting attorney in the Casey Anthony trial is being candid as he describes what Casey Anthony told her attorneys, how he felt about the defense team and what he felt upon seeing Caylee’s skeleton.

One of the biggest trials in Florida’s history, this case captured the nation’s attention for three years.  To give you some background information on the prosecutor’s case, they argued that Casey Anthony covered up her child’s murder because she was more interested in clubbing, partying and living the “good life” (per a tattoo on her back).  Anthony did not show signs of grieving when her daughter was apparently missing.  On the other hand, the defense claimed that the toddler died as a result of an accidental drowning in the family pool.  They also claim the grandfather helped to cover up the drowning to make it look like a murder.  Ashton was quoted as saying this was “absurd”.  He also commented that it was highly unusual that a dedicated grandfather would cover up his granddaughter’s drowning (covering her mouth with duct tape to make it look like a murder).

It’s a pretty easy read.  The first third of the book is a rehash of the circumstances of the case, so if you are familiar, you can skim.  For those who weren’t sure how they felt about the verdict or needed to know more facts about the case, this book will give plenty of information.  It becomes more and more riveting as you learn his true feelings about the things that had not been covered on television.  For instance, he tells us how he feels about the bounty hunter Leonard Padilla (the “freeloading distant cousin you can’t get rid of.”), defense attorney Cheney Mason (sexist), and of Casey’s lead attorney, he says “I genuinely dislike Jose Baez.”  Ashton says he was brought onto the prosecution team as “the case’s resident science nerd.” in their effort to convince the scientist Dr. Arpad Vass to testify.  More importantly, he discusses how everyone got caught up in the quest to figure out Casey and her lies.  This was at the cost, however, of the memory of the victim, and the crime committed.  Caylee was all but forgotten, not just to the public, but to the jury.

Jeff Ashton was an Assistant State Attorney with the Orange-Osceola State Attorney’s Office for 30 years.  He retired immediately after the Casey Anthony verdict was released.  He starts a book tour today, so will be visiting many book stores and libraries, signing books after each presentation.  If you’re in Florida, check with your local library for tour dates.
