Wade, Haslem gets ready for MLK basketball tourney

Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade said he’s already heard some trash-talking from teammate Chris Bosh.

And it has nothing to do with their pro careers, it dates back to high school.

Wade’s high school team — Chicago’s Richards — and Bosh’s former team — Dallas’ Lincoln — play Saturday in the 18th Martin Luther King Jr. Boys Basketball Classic at Miami Norland.

The out-of-towners are among 20 teams competing in 12 games Friday and Saturday, featuring some of the top squads in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

And if Wade has his way, his Chicago boys will take care of business.

“I’m going to bring that up to Bosh,” said Wade, who hopes to bring his sons to see his former team play Saturday against Lincoln at 4:45 p.m.

Wade said it has been a few years since he has seen Richards (8-6) play, although his brother, Demitris McDaniel, an assistant coach, keeps him updated. The Bulldogs won the Illinois Class 4A state title in 2008.

Bosh has one up on Wade. During Bosh’s senior year at Lincoln in 2002, the Tigers went 40-0 and were named the nation’s top team by USA Today. Although this year, Lincoln is struggling with a young team at 13-7

Wade said his high school experience paved the way for his dream to become a player in the NBA.

“I learned many of the things I know today as a player,” Wade said. “The MLK Classic is a great chance for some schools to travel and see other schools in competition. In today’s social network, it’s great for the players to be seen and get recognition.”

Heat forward Udonis Haslem also has fond memories of the tournament.
