Orlando’s iconic lake to host extreme water sports festival

Water skiing in Orlando’s Lake Eola is not something you expect to see!  In September, however, the City Beautiful will be hosting an “extreme water sports festival” featuring world-champion water skiers.  This two-day event will also include wakeboarding exhibitions, nighttime jumping competitions, music and a muscle-car show.  Held on the same weekend as the Surf Expo trade show in the Orange County Convention Center, the festival’s $100,000 purse should attract water skiing’s top talent, and plenty of spectators!!

Wondering why Lake Eola??  Well, it seems this is a nod to the lake’s history!  Skiers were part of the celebration when Eola’s fountain was unveiled in 1957 and had continued to perform there over the years since then.  So while this is new to us, it all fell into place as Orlando’s Mayor, Buddy Dyer, broke the news on Monday!  Joining Dyer in breaking the news were City Commissioner Patty Sheehan, professional skiers Ryan and Breanne Dodd and Freddy Krueger (holder of the world ski-jump record).  As a sample of things to come, Krueger even performed jumps from a ramp that was set up near the Lake Eola fountain.

Tickets are being sold for $15/day at www.soakedorlando.com for the festival on September 7th and 8th.  …and bring the kids along because this is a family affair!  For kids, ages 4-12, organizers have included a Kidz Zone, featuring extreme sports like rock climbing and bungee jumping, but there will also be face painting, caricatures and a magic show.  It seems there’ll be a little something for everybody…except maybe the swans!

The Sarasota Open 2012

by on April 6, 2012 at 8:02 pm

Clay court season begins at the Tennis Gardens at Longboat Key Club

As clay court season gets under way, the Sarasota Open, the preeminent tennis tournament in Southwest Florida, starts on April 14 and goes til April 22.  Now in its fifth year, it is the most prestigious clay court event prior to the French Open.  The clay court season is the most challenging for some players, however, because the clay diminishes the effect of a powerful serve and requires greater patience to win points.

On clay courts, balls bounce relatively high and more slowly, making it difficult to hit an outright winner.  This makes it hard for serve-based players to dominate on this surface.  The slower bounce, however, allows for bigger back swings which can generate extra power and the higher bounce calls for a more skillful forehand.  In addition, because clay is slippery, playing on it often involves the ability to slide into the ball during the stroke, as opposed to running and stopping like on a hard or grass court.  This means the clay court player must exercise patience and control, and develop a great deal of lower body strength in order to avoid all the leg strains and injuries that could be caused as they slide.

It’s unfortunate that the American tennis players struggle on clay.  Almost all European and South American players grow up playing on it which puts the Americans at a disadvantage.  Clay courts are making a comeback, however, and Florida is the perfect place for this type of court.  The prevalence of clay courts tends to coincide with the warmth and humidity of the climate.  Clay is also much cooler under a hot sun than a hard court.  In some hot, dry climates, the difficulty of keeping clay courts watered makes them rare, but where heat and water are both plentiful, such as in Florida, clay is especially popular.

The Sarasota Open is scheduled to return to the Tennis Gardens at Longboat Key Club, and this year there is an increased prize purse of 100K for the Men’s Invitational Tournament and the addition of a Ladies Invitational Tournament.  The weeklong event will include qualifying rounds for men’s and women’s tournaments, finals rounds and a final championship tournament.  Tickets to the Sarasota Open range from $5 for Qualifying Round general admission tickets to $100 (Finals Round) Box Seats.  Finals will be held on April 22, 2012.

There is still a need for ball persons to work the tournament. Ball persons receive free tickets for two family members for the first three days of the tournament — April 14-16.

Call (941) 809-8996 or visit sarasotaopen.org for more tournament information.

This promises to be a really fun weekend for everyone!!  Not only are there the typical festival type of activities, Ron Jon has done a really great job of offering all attendees and their families the opportunity to take part in traditional surfing events as well as traditional Easter events.  This weekend, spectators don’t have to be just spectators!  Beginners can attend surfing and boarding clinics while foodies enter the wing eating contest and enjoy the variety of musical acts!  On Sunday, families can join an Easter egg hunt, go to one of the Easter sunrise services, or take part any of the other festivities!

As titans in the industry, Ron Jon continues to bring major surfing events to the east coast of the U.S.  The 2012 Ron Jon Easter Surfing Festival will take place from Friday, April 6 to Sunday, April 8 at both the Cocoa Beach Pier and Shepard Park Beach. The festival is free and open to all, water sports enthusiast or not, regardless of age and gender.

The Sony Ericsson Tennis Open in Miami

by on March 31, 2012 at 1:03 am

The Sony Ericsson Finals this weekend!

The Sony Ericsson Open is wrapping up at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park.  This is one of the biggest non-Grand Slam tourneys in the world!  Dubbed “The Winter Wimbledon”, since its inception in 1985, the top players in the world have played this tournament.  Past winners have included Agassi, Federer, Djokovic, the Williams sisters, Steffi Graf, and Kim Clijsters.

This year, the world’s top players have descended upon Miami to compete for approximately $4 million in prize money (both men’s and women’s prize is approximately $4.5 million).  Currently, those in attendance are Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Andy Roddick, Kim Clijsters, Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova and Caroline Wozniacki.  Unfortunately, some of the favorites experienced some injuries.  Clijsters was sidelined for 4 weeks with a torn hip muscle.  Rafa Nadal withdrew due to a knee injury but hopes to heal quickly so that he can play the French Open in July.  Venus Williams seemed to go out of her way not to make excuses about her physical condition (Sjogren’s syndrome is the chronic condition that leaves her easily fatigued).

After all the upsets…and some predictable losses, it comes down to this–Maria Sharapova will face Agnieszka Radwanska in the finals on Saturday, March 31.  This is Sharapova’s second successive final and third final this year.  She was runner-up at the Australian Open in January and at Indian Wells two weeks ago.  Radwanska will be seeking the ninth and biggest title of her career.  Andy Murray will face Novak Djokovic.  Murray will be looking for his second win at the Sony Ericsson Open.  This final will be Djokovic’s first since winning the Australian Open for his fifth Grand Slam title and third in a row.

So, whether you call it the ATP Masters 1000 tennis tournament, the Sony Ericsson Open or the Miami Masters, you know this is great tennis!!  The Sony Ericsson Open is an international event with visitors coming from all over the world, so vacation packages are a hot commodity but stadium tickets are still available for this weekend’s play.  If you’re unable to go, the live tournament will be broadcast on CBS.  The women’s final is on Saturday at 12:30pm, while the men’s will be on Sunday at 1pm.

Gators bring home a 3rd Consecutive National Championship

University of Florida Mens Indoor Track & Field Champions

NCAA Photos

The University of Florida Men’s Track & Field team bring home 3rd consecutive national championship edging out rival Arkansas by 5 points.   It is rumored that this win may lead to talks of the gator replacing the Florida Panther as the fastest animal in the state.  One thing is for certain is the Gators mean business.  When preparation meets opportunity great things happen.  Coach Mike Holloway certainly had his team prepared.  After the loss of senior Gray Horn during pole vault warm-ups, the Gators responded to their call to action by exactly what they believed they could do, win.

Demps (Winter Garden), a senior, won the 60 in 6.52 seconds. McQuay (Rivera Beach) took the 400 in 45.77, and Craddock won the triple jump at 54 feet, 11 1/2 to seal the team title.  Jeremy Postin (Auburndale) and Eddie Lovett (West Palm Beach) both came up big for the Gators as well taking them from fifth to second place with their performances leading in the final events.

The NCAA Indoor Championships will air on Sunday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU.

Mike Holloway and Florida Go For The Trifecta

by on March 5, 2012 at 5:10 am
This Friday, the NCAA Men’s Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships kick off with Mike Holloway and Florida Gators working on a 3rd consecutive Championship title.

Mike Holloway UF Head Coach, Track & Field

Recently named Assistant Coach for Team USA at the 2012 Olympics, Mike Holloway is what’s hot in Florida.  After bringing home his first NCAA Championship to the University of Florida just two years ago, he was named 2010 U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Men’s Indoor Head Coach of the Year.  Now in his 14th Season, 7th as Head Coach, things continue to look promising for the Gators.  Jeff Demps, former Gators running back , 8th on the school’s all-time rushing list (2,470 yards) has changed his mind about giving the NFL a try and instead decided to concentrate on qualifying for the Olympics.  Demps was projected to go somewhere around the middle-to-late round of the draft as the No. 11 running back according to Scouts Inc.

He apparently loves being on the track.  There was no better demonstration of this than his junior world record finish (10.01 seconds) in the 100 meters at the 2008 Olympic Trials.  So this pair of Mike Holloway and Jeff Demps will team up this Spring and possible again in the 2012 Olympics.  Can’t wait to see how that story will unfold.  In his five seasons as head coach, Holloway oversaw seven individual and relay NCAA titles and two NCAA East Regional titles.

a gator high

There is no question the Gators know how to win.  The question now is how many times.

Boise State University plays host the 2012 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships, Mar. 9-10, 2012 at Jackson Track at the Idaho Center.  Competition begins at 10am on Friday, March 9, 2012.  Go Gators #TeamFlorida
